Winter in Yellowstone, Where Buffalo Still Roam

In winter Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming is blanketed with snow, the crowds are gone, and the roads are traveled mostly by snow coaches and snowmobiles. Main Street Tours of Torrance is offering two tours to the park, Feb. 25 to March 2 and March 4 to 9.

The trip includes a guided tour in heated, track-driven snow coaches to remote areas of Yellowstone to observe wildlife. Cost: $1,075 per person, double occupancy, including round-trip air fare between LAX and Salt Lake City, motor-coach transportation to the park, two nights’ lodging in Jackson Hole and three nights at Old Faithful Snow Lodge. New Mexico: Holidays

A mix of Spanish, Native American and Anglo American holiday traditions makes up the celebrations in Santa Fe.

Aventura Artistica is hosting its annual “Eggnog in Santa Fe Tour” from Dec. 23 to 29. Guests will stay at the Hyatt Tamaya Resort on the Santa Ana Reservation. On the itinerary are Bosque del Apache, where thousands of cranes and snow geese winter; Acoma Pueblo, where residents will light luminarias ; and the Santa Clara Pueblo, where tour participants will make pottery at the School of American Research. Europe: Music

Two Los Angeles-area music professors will lead their annual “Famous Composers Tour” from July 15 to 29 to visit the places where Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Strauss and Wagner, among others, were born, lived and composed. The tour begins in Zurich, Switzerland, and continues on to Eisenach, Leipzig and Munich in Germany; Salzburg and Vienna in Austria; and Prague, Czech Republic. Four concerts, palace and city tours and a river cruise are included.

England: Victoriana

You can live like a 19th century British gentleman or woman on a seven-night visit to a restored Victorian estate in Warwickshire, England. “At Home in Walton Hall” is a tour with outings to the Cotswolds, Oxford and Warwick Castle. Also included are BritRail tickets to London and tickets to many museums and tourist sites. Tour dates are Jan. 4 to 12 and Jan. 18 to 26.

Alabama: Architecture

Mobile, one of Alabama’s oldest cities, was established in 1702 by the French, and the first Europeans to see its bay most likely were Spanish explorers in 1519. A March 10 to 15 Interhostel tour for adults 50 and older will focus on Spain’s attempts to colonize the Gulf Coast, and highlights will include Mobile’s architecture. Visits are planned to the Conde-Charlotte Museum House, built in 1822 to 1824 as a jail and now a showplace for period furnishings; the Oakleigh Period House Museum, erected by a merchant in 1833 and currently the city’s official antebellum museum; the Bragg-Mitchell Mansion, raised in 1855 and noted for its fluted columns and oak trees; and Bellingrath Home & Gardens, an American “castle” built in 1932. In March, flowers should be blooming in the 60-acre garden.

Patagonia: Hiking

Patagonia, in southern Chile and Argentina, has dense evergreen and southern beech forests, turquoise lakes, abundant wildlife, glaciers and granite peaks. A Jan. 5 to 22 trip from Andes Adventures combines hikes in three national parks in Patagonia: Torres del Paine, Los Glaciares and Tierra del Fuego. Participants should be in good health.

New Zealand: Adventure

The North and South islands of New Zealand offer different sorts of adventures, but both are worth visiting. The North Island gives travelers an opportunity to stay on a working farm, learn about Maori culture in Rotorua and see glowworms in the Waitomo Caves. On the South Island, outdoor activities include glacier hiking, swimming with dolphins and jet-boating. Outdoor Travel Adventures of San Diego combines both islands in two 12-day trips scheduled from Feb. 12 to 23 and March 5 to 16.

Mexico: Hiking

In the state of Chihuahua are the hidden archeological sites and hot springs of Copper Canyon, and the region can be explored on foot with guides now through April. The trek combines a train ride with hiking and lessons in natural history and the remote Tarahumara people. Hiking trips are 10 days each.
