MILITARY FRONT
The Pentagon more than doubled the number of commandos operating in Afghanistan over the weekend, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said. Their mission is to help anti-Taliban forces formulate military strategy, to route them supplies and ammunition and to help U.S. pilots spot Taliban and Al Qaeda targets to bomb.
AIRPORT SECURITY
Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta called for sanctions against United Airlines for a security breach at Chicago’s O’Hare airport over the weekend. Security workers confiscated two knives as a passenger passed through metal detectors--but missed seven other knives and a stun gun, police said. The airline searched his luggage at the gate and found the other weapons.
ANTHRAX
Anthrax was detected inside the Pentagon and promptly removed, officials said, but cleansing the Senate office building where an anthrax-laced letter was opened weeks ago has proved more elusive. The Mayo Clinic unveiled a faster test for anthrax exposure. And more than 300 people turned out for the funeral of New York City’s first anthrax fatality in the crisis. How Kathy Nguyen, 61, contracted the disease remains a mystery.
