Sylmar May Get LAX Park-Ride Lot
The Airport Commission is considering plans for a 1,290-car park-and-ride center in Sylmar for Los Angeles and Ontario international airports.
The $11.8-million project would be built on 12 acres at 13503 San Fernando Road, near the Golden State and Foothill freeways. The Department of Water and Power owns the land.
The commission is due to vote on the proposal Tuesday. If approved, the center would open in 18 months.
It would provide nonstop bus service to LAX and, in a second phase, Ontario. The center’s buses could also serve Palmdale Airport if commercial flights begin operating there, said Richard Janisse, a deputy executive director for Los Angeles World Airports.
The project is designed to reduce auto traffic by 20% at the Van Nuys Flyaway lot near the Van Nuys Airport.
The flyaway opened in 1975 and has become so popular that it often turns away cars during holidays and the summer months, said Stacy Geere, a Van Nuys Airport spokeswoman.
Flyaway buses now ferry about 2,400 passengers a day to and from LAX. The round-trip ride is $6, plus $2 for parking.
The commission is exploring possibilities for other park-and-ride centers in downtown Los Angeles and Irwindale. No firm plans have been made yet.
