Billy Hamill won the 2001 Fall Classic at the Costa Mesa Speedway.
Hamill, who grew up in Monrovia and won the world championship in 1996, outdueled 1997 world champion Greg Hancock through Turn 1, then outlasted Costa Mesa’s Bobby Schwartz to the finish line.
Schwartz, 45, in his 28th season of speedway, won two pairs and one team world championship in 1981-82.
