Two Long Beach men were sentenced in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday for their roles in a May Day demonstration in Long Beach in which about 100 people were arrested during clashes with police, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said.

Robert Middaugh, 29, who pleaded guilty to felony assault on a police officer, was sentenced to three years in prison. Alec Schwarz, 22, was sentenced to one year in county jail and three years’ probation after pleading no contest to two felonies--resisting arrest and conspiracy to commit a battery--and to misdemeanor rioting.

About 200 people participated in the protest at Pine Avenue and Ocean Boulevard on May 1. Several protesters and one police officer suffered minor injuries, police said.
