California victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks can receive free legal services related to the attacks under a new program announced Friday by Gov. Gray Davis.

The services will be provided under a new public-private partnership by the state, California lawyer groups and private law firms.

Under the program, California residents who lost loved ones in or were victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks are eligible for free legal advice.

Volunteer attorneys are being trained to help victims and relatives resolve issues specific to the attacks, including financial assistance, immigration, child custody, wills and health benefits issues.

Eligible families will be contacted by the state Victim Compensation Board, according to the governor’s office. Those not contacted can call (800) 777-9229 for information.
