Should Someone Put Contract on Dodgers?

Share

In the Nov. 10 Viewpoint, Leonard Braddock of Los Angeles, on the subject of major league baseball contraction, states, “Let’s just allow the Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Braves and a few others to fight it out.”

Dodgers? Where have you been for the last 13 years, Leonard?

I’ve been a Dodger fan for more than 50 years. They seem to enjoy wallowing in mediocrity. They have made more than their share of mistakes, not only in players, but in choosing executives as well.

In ’88 they got N.Y. Met lucky, and think they can do it again, with mostly below-to-average ballplayers. They talk about the importance of pitching, then pick up Baldwin, Mulholland and Trombley. If any of these three are with the team next season, I’ll never go to or watch another Dodger game.

he Dodgers reacquire Valdes and now Daal, the Diamondbacks got Johnson and Schilling. It’s apparent to me that Dan Evans doesn’t have an eye for pitching talent. Hopefully, he can recognize a leadoff hitter, center fielder and shortstop. If not, he’ll be on the radio with Malone.

So, the Diamondbacks are World Series champions in only their fourth year, Jason Giambi is choosing between St. Louis and the Yankees, Chan Ho Park is as good as gone, and the Dodgers have Omar Daal. Also, it seems the catlike, exciting Eric Karros will be back at first base in 2002 (if there’s even a season in 2002).

Ladies and gentlemen, these are your big-market Los Angeles Dodgers--a team with lots of money, but absolutely no chance of winning because all Bob Daly cares about is raising ticket prices while maintaining the bottom line.

By the time my kid grows up, he’ll have seen 21 baseball victory parades--none of them in L.A. Thanks, Bob. Thanks, Fox.

Let baseball contract where it has expanded (if it must do so at all). The Montreal Expos are an excellent choice. But the Minnesota Twins (baseball’s original Washington Senators) are not.

Move them back to Washington if necessary, but in the name of responsibility to the sport’s heritage, let’s kill the Marlins, Devil Rays or Bud Selig’s precious Brewers instead.
