Oilers Win, but Lose Smyth
Josh Green and Anson Carter each scored twice as the Edmonton Oilers routed the Chicago Blackhawks, 7-1, at Edmonton, Canada, yet lost inspirational leader Ryan Smyth to a broken ankle.
Smyth, Edmonton’s leading scorer with 23 points, left the game early in the first period with a broken right ankle.
He was taken to the hospital and underwent immediate surgery to insert a plate in his leg. He is expected to miss 10-12 weeks.

Detroit 8, Minnesota 3--Steve Yzerman and Luc Robitaille each had two goals and an assist as the Red Wings beat the Wild at Detroit.
Each player also reached a milestone, as Yzerman got the 650th goal of his NHL career, and Robitaille collected his 601st and 602nd, moving past Jari Kurri into 12th on the all-time list.
Detroit’s Brett Hull picked up two assists to reach 1,200 points for his career.
Florida 2, Buffalo 0--Viktor Kozlov scored both goals and Trevor Kidd made 30 saves as the Panthers beat the Sabres at Buffalo, N.Y.
Colorado 1, New York Islanders 0--Patrick Roy posted his second straight shutout, and Shjon Podein scored his first goal since Oct. 23 as the Avalanche won at Denver.
Atlanta 4, Nashville 4--Defensemen Todd Reirden and Karlis Skrastins traded goals late in the third period at Atlanta as the Predators tied the Thrashers.
Defenseman Scott Stevens, 37, agreed to a new three-year contract with the New Jersey Devils. Stevens’ new contract, which reportedly will pay him $7 million a year, will take him through the 2004-05 season. ... Philadelphia Flyer goaltender Brian Boucher, who has the best save percentage and goals-against average in the league, will miss the next three weeks with a pulled left hamstring. ... Chicago Blackhawk right wing Steve Thomas will have surgery Monday to repair his broken left ankle. The Blackhawks said Thomas will be sidelined indefinitely.
