Hawks Withstand Celtic Barrage
Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 29 points and the Atlanta Hawks defeated Boston, 112-103, Saturday night at Atlanta despite an NBA-record 10 three-point baskets by the Celtics in the third quarter.
The Dallas Mavericks had nine three-pointers in a quarter at Vancouver on March 1, 1996, and Houston had nine in a quarter at Seattle on Dec. 9, 2000.
Dion Glover scored 24 points for Atlanta.
Paul Pierce scored 33 points and Antoine Walker had 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics.
Detroit 104, Indiana 98--Damon Jones scored 16 points at Auburn Hills, Mich., leading the Pistons to their sixth victory in seven games.
Jerry Stackhouse scored 18 points and was one of six Detroit players who scored in double figures.
Jamaal Tinsley finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds, both season highs for Indiana.
Minnesota 103, Orlando 95--Kevin Garnett had 21 points and 16 rebounds for Minnesota at Minneapolis.
Minnesota is 8-1, the best start in franchise history.
Joe Smith had 21 points and 11 rebounds, and Wally Szczerbiak had 20 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for the Timberwolves.
Tracy McGrady scored 25 points for the Magic.
Philadelphia 94, New Jersey 82--Allen Iverson scored 28 points and Derrick Coleman had 20 at East Rutherford, N.J., as the 76ers ended New Jersey’s five-game winning streak.
Aaron McKie made his first six shots and finished seven of 10 from the field for 14 points for the 76ers, who won their fifth in a row.
Portland 97, Charlotte 87--Rasheed Wallace scored 23 points and Derek Anderson scored 20 for Portland at Charlotte, N.C.
David Wesley led the Hornets with 19 points and Baron Davis scored 18.
Memphis 98, Cleveland 93--Stromile Swift scored 17 points at Memphis and the Grizzlies won their first game this season.
Shane Battier scored 20 points, Pau Gasol had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Jason Williams had 16 points and 14 assists for Memphis.
Lamond Murray had 27 points and 16 rebounds for Cleveland.
Milwaukee 104, Utah 93--Glenn Robinson had 34 points and Ray Allen scored 18 for the Bucks at Milwaukee.
Karl Malone scored 30 points and Donyell Marshall had 22 for Utah.
Houston 124, Dallas 87--Steve Francis had 33 points and Cuttino Mobley scored 20 for the Rockets at Houston.
The winning margin was the Rockets’ largest since a 45-point victory over Chicago on March 26, 2000.
Steve Nash led the Mavericks with 21 points.
Denver 103, Seattle 93--Nick Van Exel scored 38 points to help the Nuggets win at Seattle for the first time in eight seasons.
Golden State 93, Chicago 88--Jason Richardson scored a career-high 23 points for Golden State at Oakland.
Danny Fortson had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Warriors.
