A 47-year-old man sipping a cup of coffee in his vehicle before heading to work was shot to death in front of his Garden Grove residence early Monday, police said.

Police blamed the early-morning attack on an ongoing family dispute but declined to reveal specifics. No arrests had been made by late Monday, but police said they were interviewing a suspect.

The victim, whose name has not been released, stumbled out of his truck and collapsed on the street outside his residence in the 12200 block of Quartz Place. Officers administered first aid, but the man died at the scene, police said.

The man had just climbed into his truck about 7:15 a.m. when he was attacked. Police said the man’s wife had handed him a cup of coffee and was returning to the house when someone confronted the man and fired seven shots, Police Capt. Dave Abrecht said. The man was hit five times in the upper body.

The attacker fled in a green truck, officer said.

Theresa Orndorff, a neighbor, said she was getting ready for work when she heard the shots. “At first, I thought it was a nail gun,” said Orndorff, who said she has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 40 years. “But they were loud and that really caught my attention.”

Maria Sanchez, 34, a neighborhood resident for 10 years, said the shooting left her in fear “because no one has been arrested and maybe [the attacker] will come back.”

Police said the couple had been renting a room in a house for several months.
