Flames Sign Turek to $19-Million Contract

Calgary Flame goalie Roman Turek passed up a chance to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, signing a four-year contract Monday.

The 31-year-old Czech Republic native is leading the league with a 13-0-2-2 record and 1.62 goals-against average. Turek will receive a reported $19 million.

Turek joined the Flames in a draft-day trade with St. Louis.

Mario Lemieux, off to the slowest start of his career because of season-long hip pain, missed practice again and might not play Wednesday when the Pittsburgh Penguins host Vancouver.

Lemieux rushed himself back into the lineup after missing five games following arthroscopic hip surgery Oct. 29, only to pull himself out again after three games as the pain persisted.

The Dallas Stars waived struggling defenseman Jyrki Lumme after acquiring him in an off-season trade with the Phoenix Coyotes.

Lumme was ineffective in the Stars’ system, registering one assist in 15 games.

San Jose sent struggling backup goalie Miikka Kiprusoff to the Sharks’ American Hockey League minor-league affiliate in Cleveland. Kiprusoff is 1-2-1 with a .904 save percentage.

The Sharks called up goalie Vesa Toskala.
