The Peepers Have Spoken

I have to share my favorite Peeps “recipe” (“The Queen of Peeps Tells All!” Oct. 31). It’s called “Peep Brulee” and is very simple. Hold a Peep (preferably an original yellow chick) over an open flame with a fork or skewer. While turning constantly, toast your Peep until bubbly. The inside will be melty and the outside will form a delicately crunchy shell.

If you are the Queen of Peeps, I am your Lady in Waiting. Each year on Feb. 15 (the day the Easter candies arrive on the shelf), I run to the store and buy 10 boxes of marshmallow chickens and bring them home. The sight of them--150 total--is almost as good as the taste.

I was most amused by your article about Peeps. When I was small, my Easter basket always had a box of my favorite little yellow chicks. And when I was grown, my mother would always have a box for me when I arrived for the holiday. I haven’t eaten them in many years, but once I mentioned to my husband that I used to love them and he was horrified that I would eat such junk ! (He grew up in Europe and is a chocolate snob.) I could taste them after reading your piece. Nostalgia is such a pleasant experience.
