Fresno State Falls in Upset

Darius Songaila put back a missed shot with 1.7 seconds left and Wake Forest defeated No. 23 Fresno State, 62-61, in the semifinals of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament at New York.

The Demon Deacons (4-0) will play No. 18 Syracuse in Friday’s final.

Wake Forest used a flurry of three-point baskets, including four by Craig Dawson in the first half, to open a 16-point lead over the Bulldogs (2-1).

No. 5 Missouri 78, No. 9 Iowa 77--Clarence Gilbert made a free throw with eight-tenths of a second left, capping his 27-point performance for the Tigers in the Guardians Classic final at Kansas City, Mo.

No. 11 Virginia 115, Howard 66--Chris Williams scored 22 points and Roger Mason scored 21 for the Cavaliers in the first round of the John Thompson Classic at Charlottesville, Va.

The Cavaliers (3-0) made 11 of 15 three-point shots in the first half and finished with 14, one short of the school record.

No. 15 Oklahoma State 95, Texas Christian 77--Frederik Jonzen had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Cowboys in the final of the Las Vegas Tournament.

No. 18 Syracuse 69, No. 13 Michigan State 58--Kueth Duany scored a career-high 24 points for the Orangemen (4-0) in a semifinal of the Preseason NIT at New York.

No. 16 Georgetown 76, Coastal Carolina 51--Mike Sweetney scored a career-high 28 points for the Hoyas at Washington.

Georgetown (2-1) shook off a brief second-half run by the Chanticleers (0-2).

No. 17 Boston College 80, New Hampshire 77--Troy Bell scored 15 of his 22 points in the first half and the Eagles (2-0) withstood a 22-point run by the Wildcats in the final 71/2 minutes at Boston.

Chris Brown made the second of two free throws with 26 seconds left to pull New Hampshire within 78-77. Austin Ganly led the Wildcats (0-2) with 28 points.

No. 20 Indiana 101, Alaska Anchorage 66--Dane Fife scored 20 points, including six three-point baskets, for the Hoosiers in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage

No. 22 Alabama 81, 12 Memphis 70--Rod Grizzard scored 16 points for the Crimson Tide (3-1) in a consolation game of the Guardians Classic.

Terrance Green scored 24 points as Nevada (2-0) defeated St. Mary’s, 66-61, at Moraga, Calif. It was the 22nd consecutive loss for St. Mary’s (0-2)....Ryan Davis’ driving basket from the lane with 15 seconds to play lifted San Jose State (2-2) over Cal State Sacramento, 62-60, at San Jose. The Hornets are 1-3....Tony Bland scored 24 in San Diego State’s 78-71 victory against Norfolk State at San Diego. The Aztecs are 2-1.
