In Daniel Sullivan’s comedy romp “Inspecting Carol,” a theater company is expecting a visit from an arts funding inspector, and it seems he has arrived just as everything goes wrong with a production of “A Christmas Carol.”

Music

Celebrating its 24th season and a new Christmas album, Chanticleer, the male vocal ensemble from San Francisco, returns to the Irvine Barclay Theatre for a holiday performance. Its repertoire will include Gregorian chants, a recent work by John Tavener, Franz Biebl’s “Ave Maria” and a medley of traditional carols from various cultures, including French, English, Welsh and Huron. Joseph Jennings remains the ensemble’s music director.

Recent ripples in the Stereolab pond include the departure of keyboardist Morgane Lhote, but with Londoner Tim Gane and French-born chanteuse Laetitia Sadier still running the show, the new album “Sound-Dust” is firmly in the synth-pop-exotica tradition that has made the band an indie-rock fixture.
