Woman Adopts Pair of Junkyard Turkeys

From Times Staff Reports

Patty Shenker paid thanks to America’s Thanksgiving icon--the turkey--by giving a home on her Acton ranch to two birds that she helped rescue. Shenker adopted the birds this week after animal rights activists saved 100 turkeys from a Pick-Your-Part salvage yard in Orange County that had planned to use the birds as part of a failed holiday sales promotion.

Shenker got the birds from Farm Sanctuary, an animal rescue group that took the remaining turkeys to its Orland, Calif., farm.

The Pick-Your-Part advertising campaign invited customers to buy an auto part, then take a turn chasing turkeys around the yard. If they could catch one, it would cost 25 cents to take it home. But the marketing scheme got the attention of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and Farm Sanctuary.
