Brett Hull had a goal and assisted on the go-ahead score as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Calgary Flames, 4-2, Tuesday night at Detroit, extending the Red Wings’ unbeaten streak to eight games.

Detroit has the best record in the NHL (21-3-1-1) because its new stars--Hull, Luc Robitaille and Dominik Hasek--continue to blend well with the standouts already in place.

Robitaille’s 14th goal padded Detroit’s lead to 4-2 late in the second. Hasek, who stopped 19 shots, didn’t allow a goal over the final 43-plus minutes.

Calgary had only 12 shots in the last two periods.

“That’s the least chances we’ve given up in back-to-back periods this season,” Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman said.

Robitaille said it was important for the Red Wings to stay aggressive despite their two-goal lead.

“We wanted to play a great third,” Robitaille said. “We played well, we really shut them down.”

Pittsburgh 6, New Jersey 0--Robert Lang scored a goal and set up three others, one when New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur wandered nearly 50 feet from the net, and the Penguins again dominated the Devils at Pittsburgh.

Ian Moran and Alexei Kovalev scored on two of the Penguins’ first three shots--Kovalev has four goals in two games against New Jersey--as they again confounded Brodeur, who has less success against them than any other team.

Brodeur left after allowing four goals on eight shots. He came into the season without a losing record against any NHL team, but fell to 12-13-4 against Pittsburgh.

St. Louis 4, Ottawa 2--Pavol Demitra had two goals and two assists, and Keith Tkachuk added a goal and two assists at St. Louis.

Ottawa has lost two in a row after an 11-game unbeaten streak ended Saturday.
