When Trash Collector’s Away, the Vermin May Play

Orange County health officials don’t anticipate problems in the early stages of the countywide trash strike. But if it lasts longer than two weeks, they warn of rats and other vermin eating garbage.

Refuse-hauling companies are collecting trash where it’s generated in the greatest quantities, such as hospitals and restaurants. Residential areas have lower priority, so expect to see your trash cans sitting out longer.

Health officials said rodents carry diseases, and they advised keeping lids on trash cans, and if plastic bags are used, to double-bag the trash and keep the bags tightly sealed.

“Also, separate your trash, keeping the recyclables from the perishables,” said Pat Markley, a health agency spokeswoman.

Coffee grounds and organic material are good for starting a compost pile that later can be used in the garden, Markley said.

Residents can take their trash to a trash transfer station or to a landfill. A fee is charged at landfills, Markley said.
