From Times Staff Reports

Gov. Gray Davis appointed nine new judges Wednesday to Los Angeles County Superior Court, which court officials say will ease caseloads throughout the county.

The judges are: Federal Magistrate Judge Ann I. Jones, Superior Court Commissioner John T. Doyle, Managing Assistant City Atty. Leslie E. Brown, Assistant City Atty. William N. Sterling, Assistant U.S. Atty. Dorothy L. Shubin, Deputy Dist. Attys. Martin L. Herscovitz and Cynthia Rayvis, and private lawyers Marjorie S. Steinberg and Richard H. Kirschner.

The appointments have been long awaited in Los Angeles County, where the court has had to rely on retired judges to help with the caseload. Even with the new judges, there are 16 vacancies.

“We’re looking forward to adding those judicial officers,” said Assistant Presiding Judge Robert Dukes.

“It will allow people to catch their breath.”

The judges will go through a two-week training period before being sworn in, Dukes said.
