Luke Staley ran for 207 yards and four touchdowns and caught a 28-yard scoring pass from Brandon Doman as No. 20 BYU beat winless Utah State, 54-34, at Provo, Utah.

BYU (5-0) erased a 27-21 halftime deficit to beat Utah State (0-5) for the 16th time in the last 17 meetings.

Golf

Chris Riley had two eagles and four birdies in an erratic four-under-par 67 Friday to take a share of the lead in the PGA’s Michelob Championship at Williamsburg, Va., with Jonathan Kaye and Len Mattiace.

Riley also had a double bogey on the second hole and two bogeys. Kaye shot a bogey-free 67 and Mattiace rebounded from a first-hole bogey with a six-birdie 66.

The leaders were one better than defending champion and first-round leader David Toms, who followed his 64 with a 70, and local favorite Carl Paulson (66) and Neal Lancaster (69).

Ty Tryon, 17, who made his professional debut, followed his opening 76 with a 72 to miss the cut.

Karrie Webb shot a five-under 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Dorothy Delasin after the second round of the Samsung World Championship at Vallejo, Calif. Delasin had a 71 for a three-under 141. ... Fred Gibson birdied five of the last seven holes for a four-under 68 to share the first-round lead in the seniors rain-swept Turtle Bay Championship at Kahuku, Hawaii. John Jacobs and Terry Mauney also opened with 68s.

Tennis

Eighth-seeded Elena Dementieva of Russia needed only 39 minutes to oust the world’s top player, Martina Hingis, 6-2, 6-2, from the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup at Moscow. In today’s semifinals, Dementieva will face compatriot Anastasia Myskina, a wild-card entry. She defeated Barbara Schett of Austria, 6-4, 6-2.

Top-seeded men’s defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov took the next step toward his fifth consecutive Kremlin title by eliminating fifth-seeded Thomas Johansson of Sweden, 6-3, 7-5. In today’s semifinals, Kafelnikov will face fourth-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany, who ousted Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden, 6-1, 6-4.

American James Blake upset Marcelo Rios of Chile, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, to set up a semifinal against Lleyton Hewitt of Australia in the Japan Open at Tokyo. Hewitt defeated Francisco Clavet of Spain, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

In women’s play, top-seeded Monica Seles of the U.S. defeated Ai Sugiyama, 7-5, 6-4, to secure a spot in the finals. It was her seventh consecutive win over Sugiyama. No. 7 Joanette Kruger of South Africa will face second-seeded Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand today to determine who will play Seles.

Motor Racing

Jeff Burton set a track record in winning his first Busch series pole of the 2001 season, taking the top spot for the Little Trees 300 at Concord, N.C. Burton ran a lap at 179.485 mph around the 11/2-mile oval at Lowe’s Motor Speedway.

His lap bested the year-old record of 178.956 mph set by Matt Kenseth.

Top Fuel driver Mike Dunn set a Maple Grove Raceway track speed record of 326.40 mph in his first qualifying attempt in the NHRA Nationals at Mohnton, Pa. Dunn finished the quarter-mile run in 4.570 seconds. Gary Scelzi led the division, finishing in 4.544 seconds at 320.40 mph. Gary Densham set the Funny Car track record for elapsed time during the second qualifying session, posting a 4.833 at 307.79.

Qualifying for the IRL’s season-ending Chevy 500 at Fort Worth was rained out. The lineup for today’s race will be set by entrant points.

Miscellany

Former heavyweight boxing champion Riddick Bowe, on trial in Charlotte, N.C., for the abduction of his wife and five children in 1998, avoided prison time when a federal judge gave him credit for the time he has spent on probation.

After getting the case back from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. District Judge Graham Mullen sentenced Bowe to 18 months in prison and then released him on bond pending an appeal.

Saudi Arabia held on to first place in Group A of the final round of Asian qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Japan and South Korea, beating Iraq, 2-1, at Amman, Jordan. Saudi Arabia (4-1-2) has 14 points, two ahead of Iran (3-0-3) and seven in front of Iraq (2-4-1). At Tehran, Iran won 1-0 against visiting Thailand (0-2-3).

A Glasgow Celtic fan accused of taunting U.S. player Claudio Reyna by imitating an airplane, apparently in reference to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was banned by the Scottish club. David Munro, 32, was banned from Celtic Park after he was seen on television with his arms outstretched as Reyna, a Ranger midfielder, prepared to take a corner kick Sunday.

South Carolina extended Athletic Director Mike McGee’s contract four years, through April 2005.
