Anderson Can’t Save the Angels

Share

Seemingly one of the more blase Angels in club history, Garret Anderson has been one of the franchise’s most consistent players.

He was his steady self at Edison Field Friday night as he had two hits, including a run-scoring single against the Oakland Athletics, improving his personal best for hits in a season to 191 and runs batted in to 122.

But it wasn’t enough against the steam-rolling and wild card-winning Athletics, who won their 100th game of the season courtesy of their 6-2 victory in front of 26,343.

Tim Hudson (18-9) got the win for the Athletics, who will open the divisional playoffs Wednesday at the New York Yankees. Oakland (100-60) is 27-4 in its last 31 games.

Ramon Ortiz (13-11) took the loss for the slumping Angels (75-85), who have dropped five consecutive and 17 of their past 19 games.

About the only positive for the Angels was Anderson being presented the Gene Autry Trophy for the second time in three years. The trophy winner is selected by a team vote.

Anderson, who set an Angel record for RBIs by a left-handed batter, has the third-most hits in team history behind Darin Erstad’s 240 in 2000 and Alex Johnson’s 202 in 1970.
