Jagr Gets Goal, Assist in Debut With Capitals

Jaromir Jagr had a goal and an assist in his Washington debut, and the Capitals tied a franchise record for most goals in an opener with a 6-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday night at Washington.

Jagr was playing in a uniform other than Pittsburgh’s for the first time in his 12-season NHL career.

Ulf Dahlen had a goal and two assists, and Jeff Halpern, Calle Johansson and Peter Bondra also scored for Washington.

The Devils’ only goal was scored by a rookie called up from Albany the day before. Josef Boumedienne marked his NHL debut with a goal in the first period.

Philadelphia 3, Columbus 3-Justin Williams scored on a rebound with 4:14 left in regulation to give the Flyers a tie at Philadelphia.

Kim Johnsson scored twice for the Flyers.

Grant Marshall scored two power-play goals and Tyler Wright added a goal for Columbus, which was outshot, 40-18.

Boston 4, Atlanta 3-Bill Guerin scored 2:38 into overtime as host Boston snapped a four-game losing streak to Atlanta.

Boston’s Brian Rolston tied it 3-3 at 2:25 of the third. Shean Donovan scored two goals for the Thrashers.

Minnesota 0, San Jose 0-Backup goalie Dwayne Roloson stopped 36 shots for Minnesota at San Jose.

San Jose outshot Minnesota, 36-19, as Shark goalie Evgeni Nabokov was barely tested by the Wild.

Buffalo 3, Ottawa 2-Stu Barnes scored the game-winner with 57 seconds remaining at Buffalo.

Buffalo’s Tim Connolly tied the score, 2-2, with 27 seconds elapsed in the third period.

Martin Biron stopped 30 shots for Buffalo.

New York Islanders 3, Florida 0-Chris Osgood made 31 saves for his 31st career shutout and New York stopped nine power plays at Sunrise, Fla.

The Islanders are 2-0 for the first time since 1987.

Alexei Yashin, Mark Parrish and Shawn Bates scored.

Toronto 2, Montreal 2-Yanic Perreault scored his second goal of the season for host Montreal.

Perreault tied the score, 2-2, with 10:44 left in the third period, 2:02 after a goal by Toronto’s Nik Antropov.

Jose Theodore stopped 27 shots for the Canadiens.

Calgary 4, Chicago 0-Roman Turek made 23 saves at Calgary for his second consecutive shutout.

Craig Conroy, Dave Lowry, Marc Savard and Craig Berube scored.

St. Louis 2, Nashville 2-Mike Keane jammed a shot under goalie Tomas Vokoun’s legs in the second period to get St. Louis a tie at Nashville.

Detroit 4, Vancouver 1-Brendan Shanahan scored his fourth goal of the season and Dominik Hasek made 29 saves for Detroit at Vancouver.

Edmonton 6, Phoenix 2-Ryan Smyth scored twice for host Edmonton, which outshot the Coyotes, 41-16.
