Home Trash Pickups to Resume Today
Orange County trash haulers are continuing to catch up with the logjam caused by last week’s 5-day strike. Haulers concentrated on commercial refuse Sunday, and full residential service is expected to resume today.
“By the end of the week, they’ll be caught up,” said Janice V. Goss, interim director of the county’s Integrated Waste Management Department.
She said that two county landfills--Olinda-Alpha near Brea and Bowerman near Irvine--will be open an extra hour Monday through Friday to help deal with the backlog.
The county’s first major trash strike in 20 years ended Friday, when striking trash haulers accepted an agreement that they had rejected against the advice of union leaders a week earlier. Service was disrupted in unincorporated areas and some 25 cities.
The agreement immediately raises wages from $12.90 to $13.90 per hour. Wages then rise by smaller increments to $16 within five years. Workers also will receive more benefits and four additional vacation days.
