Relishing Her Broadway Role

NEW YORK — You have until Oct. 28 to catch Brooke Shields as you’ve never seen her before, playing the no-better-than-she-should-be heroine of “Cabaret” onstage here. Shields is amazed at the size of her Broadway audiences.
“Having this wonderful show to do and having people seem so thankful that we are doing it is a big help in these times,” she said. “I did go down to ground zero and shook hands and autographed hard hats, but that seemed so little for me to do.
“When this ends I’ll take some time off with my new husband [Chris Henchy] and return to California. This role is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but it was so great to be part of the theater community and to feel at last that I was valid.”
To date there is no replacement mentioned for Shields, though Raul Esparza will take over the role of emcee Oct. 26.
