Excite@Home Corp., which filed for bankruptcy protection last month, stopped taking orders for its high-speed Internet service, leaving cable operators with no way to hook up new subscribers.

Existing service is not affected by the move, but subscribers will not be able to make changes to accounts, said a spokeswoman for Cox Communications Inc., an Excite@Home partner.

Excite@Home, which provides access to 3.7 million subscribers over cable-TV lines, told its partners the suspension is temporary but gave no indication of when provisioning will resume.

Cox said it will continue to take orders but will not promise installation before Oct. 24.

AT&T; Broadband also will continue to take orders, but installation appointments will be delayed until Excite@Home resumes provisioning or another system is put in place, a spokeswoman said.

Comcast Corp. said it has taken steps to continue the roll-out of cable modems.

An Excite@Home spokeswoman did not return calls seeking comment.
