From Times Staff Reports

As part of a Valleywide effort to improve public library services, ground will be broken today for the expansion of the West Valley Regional Branch Library.

The branch at 19036 Vanowen St. will grow from 12,500 to 14,000 square feet and be outfitted with new computer technology. The branch will be closed for about a year during construction.

The Los Angeles Public Library is replacing 28 branches, including 12 in the San Fernando Valley. The new branches will offer state-of-the-art technology, said Brenda Breaux, a library spokeswoman.

To mitigate the effect of the construction on service, hours have been increased at branches in Studio City and Panorama City.

Also, starting Monday a new bookmobile will serve Encino, Tarzana, North Hollywood, Sun Valley, Valley Plaza and Sherman Oaks.
