Red Wing Streak Flames Out, 4-2

Dean McAmmond, Scott Nichol, Igor Kravchuk and Jarome Iginla scored as the Calgary Flames defeated Detroit, 4-2, Wednesday night to spoil the home debut of the new-look Red Wings.

Detroit, which had a franchise-record 19-game unbeaten streak in the regular season at home, lost for the first time in Joe Louis Arena since Dec. 27.

Dominik Hasek gave up all four goals and stopped 29 shots in his first game before his new fans.

Calgary’s Roman Turek stopped 24 shots.

Kris Draper and Brendan Shanahan scored for Detroit.

Washington 5, New York Rangers 2-Jaromir Jagr had two assists for Washington before leaving the game at Madison Square Garden because of a leg injury.

Sergei Gonchar had two goals and Peter Bondra, Sylvain Cote and Ulf Dahlen also scored as the Capitals peppered rookie goalie Dan Blackburn early and often.

Jagr left with 5:21 to play in the first period after hooking legs with New York’s Igor Ulanov.

New York Islanders 6, Pittsburgh 3-Mark Parrish scored two third-period goals at Pittsburgh as the Islanders opened the season with three consecutive victories for the first time since 1986-87.

Parrish broke a 3-3 tie with a goal at 1:30 of the third. He scored his fifth goal this season at 17:41 and Claude Lapointe scored an empty-net goal in the final minute.

Steve Webb, Jason Blake and Michael Peca also scored for the Islanders.

Martin Straka scored twice and Robert Lang had a goal for the Penguins, who opened a season with three losses for the first time since 1996-97.

Buffalo 2, Philadelphia 1-Martin Biron made 26 saves and Miroslav Satan scored a short-handed goal in the second period as host Buffalo ended a five-game regular-season losing streak against Philadelphia.

Stu Barnes extended his scoring streak to three games and points streak to four games with a first-period goal for Buffalo.

Simon Gagne scored in the third period for the Flyers, who have scored nine of their 11 goals this season in the last period.

Ottawa 2, Florida 0-Jani Hurme made 36 saves for his third career shutout and Martin Havlat and Daniel Alfredsson scored at Sunrise, Fla.

Havlat scored on a power play for his fourth point in two games and Ottawa’s sixth power-play goal this season.

Florida’s Roberto Luongo was injured at 3:47 of the first period when teammate Valeri Bure’s skate cut his right forearm as the goalie went down to stop a shot.

With blood gushing from the arm, Luongo left the ice and was replaced by Trevor Kidd.

Luongo needed stitches to close the cut and is expected to be sidelined about a week.

Minnesota 2, Boston 1-Stacy Roest scored twice at St. Paul, Minn., as the Bruins had their four-game winning streak ended on the first game of a six-game, two-week trip.

Roest scored on a short-handed breakaway at 12:23 of the second period.
