USC Fans Wouldn’t Mind a Few Wins

Mind games should happen long before the season starts, and not only by the players. The athletic department needs to get the best coaching staff possible and the best players they can find. After the season starts, it’s a little late to begin thinking about what you might have done differently, or what you’re going to do now. It’s a little like changing Trojan horses in midstream.

Your only hope after such a disastrous beginning is that you come across an opponent that hasn’t prepared for the season any better than you have. Arizona State might be just what the Trojans need right now.

USC’s Kareem Kelly, as quoted in The Times last week, said, “If you’re out there thinking, you’re not going to perform well.” With a 1-4 record, maybe the Trojans should reconsider “thinking” as a means to a winning season.

Apparently, “thinking” has not negatively affected the football fortunes of that thinking man’s school across town.

Here’s something the Trojans should think about:

1. Great teams beat ranked opponents.

2. Good teams overcome their mistakes and find a way to win.

3. Bad teams find a way to lose games.

With the soft part of their schedule ahead, let’s see if the Trojans can salvage a mediocre season from going bad. Now that’s food for thought.
