Yzerman’s Overtime Goal Drops Islanders

Steve Yzerman scored the game-winning goal 2:32 into overtime as the Detroit Red Wings ended the New York Islanders’ season-opening unbeaten streak with a 5-4 victory Saturday night in sold-out Nassau Coliseum at Uniondale, N.Y.

Yzerman’s second goal of the night came after Detroit’s Luc Robitaille tied the score, 4-4, with 9.4 seconds left in regulation.

Oleg Kvasha and Alexei Yashin each had two goals and two assists for the Islanders, who opened the season with four road victories.

Montreal 3, New Jersey 1-Martin Rucinsky and Yanic Perreault scored 20 seconds apart early in the third period in front of 19,393 in the Molson Centre at Montreal.

Jeff Hackett made 23 saves as Montreal improved to 4-0-1, its best start since opening with a 10-game unbeaten streak in 1981.

Vancouver 4, Colorado 0-The host Canucks got goals from Harold Druken, Trent Klatt, Donald Bradshear and Brendan Morris.

San Jose 3, Boston 2-Marco Sturm scored the game-winner with 16 seconds to play at San Jose.

The Sharks scored all their goals in the third period.

Carolina 5, Atlanta 2-Jeff O’Neill had two goals and two assists in front of a sellout crowd of 18,545 at Atlanta.

Sami Kapanen scored for with 4:11 to play in the second period for a 3-2 lead.

St. Louis 5, Toronto 2-Keith Tkachuk and Pavol Demitra each had a goal and an assist for St. Louis at Toronto.

Doug Weight scored his first goal for St. Louis. Sergei Varlamov and Cory Stillman also scored for the Blues.

Ottawa 2, New York Rangers 2-Petr Nedved scored with 4:36 left in the third period, giving the Rangers a tie at Ottawa.

Ranger captain Mark Messier left with five minutes play in the second period, shortly after he was checked by Mike Fisher. Messier suffered bruised ribs and did not return.

Shawn McEachern and Daniel Alfredsson scored for the Senators.

Philadelphia 5, Florida 2-John LeClair and Ruslan Fedotenko scored 17 seconds apart in the second period at Sunrise, Fla.

Philadelphia, which took 53 shots, broke the game open with three goals on 21 shots in the second period.

Goalie Trevor Kidd had 48 saves.

Phoenix 5, Washington 2-Daymond Langkow scored three goals for the host Coyotes, who also got goals from Danny Markov and Daniel Briere.

Calgary 4, Dallas 3-Craig Conroy scored with 39.6 seconds left in overtime at Dallas.

Mike Modano scored twice for Dallas.

Edmonton 4, Nashville 3-Mike Comrie scored his first goal of the season and had an assist as the Oilers overcame a two-goal deficit at Nashville.

Jochen Hecht scored the game-winner at 13:46 of the third period.

Mario Lemieux plans to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins today against the Buffalo Sabres.

Lemieux sat out the last two games with a strained hip.

Vancouver defenseman Murray Baron will be sidelined at least one more week with a hairline fracture in his left ankle.
