A knife-wielding man hunting for his girlfriend was shot to death by her neighbor in North Hollywood as he slashed the resident’s screen door, police said Monday.

Police were still looking for the unidentified neighbor, who fled after the Saturday morning shooting, police Det. Mike Coffey said.

Officers received a call at 10:30 a.m. about a loud domestic dispute in the 8300 block of Amboy Avenue, Coffey said. A man later identified as Tony Saucedo, 32, allegedly had been assaulting his ex-girlfriend in the house, the detective said.

When she ran to a neighbor’s home, witnesses told police, Saucedo grabbed a knife and went looking for her, Coffey said. He stopped at the wrong house and was seen slashing the screen door, Coffey said. “He yelled and screamed and said that he was going to kill everybody inside,” the detective said.

As Saucedo tried to climb through the cut screen, a man in the house fired one shot from a pistol, hitting him in the chest, according to witnesses.

Coffey said the shooting appeared to have been self-defense.

A second man also was shot to death in North Hollywood over the weekend. The 30-year-old, whose name was withheld by police, was killed in his apartment in the 13000 block of Sherman Way, Coffey said. Officers found the suspect, Miguel Rodriguez, 18, hiding in an nearby apartment, Coffey said.

Rodriguez was arrested on suspicion of murder and is set to be arraigned today in Van Nuys Superior Court.
