From Times Staff Reports

The developer of the Treasure Island resort has dropped plans to moor a 50-foot boat near the site after learning the plan would be illegal under city ordinances.

Laguna Beach prohibits the use of motor boats within 200 yards of shore, said Joan Gladstone, a spokeswoman for Phoenix-based Athens Group.

The developer is building Laguna Beach Colony, a $150-million project to include a 275-room resort, 17 homes, 14 condominiums and 15 acres of open space. Opening is set for 2003.

Over the past year, the developer had secured approvals from five state and federal agencies to moor a boat 550 feet offshore for resort guests to use for sunset cruises and fishing excursions.
