From Times Staff Reports

A heated argument inside a Simi Valley home Wednesday night ended with one man being shot to death and a second man, an off-duty Los Angeles firefighter-paramedic, being questioned by police.

The incident occurred about 7:30 in the 3100 block of Waco Avenue, authorities said.

“There was a domestic dispute, and detectives are interviewing a lot of people,” Simi Valley Police Lt. Mike Brewer said.

Authorities refused to release the names of the victim or the man detained for questioning. But Police Sgt. John McGinty said it appeared the victim was the ex-husband of the woman who lives at the house with the firefighter.

According to police and several neighbors, the victim arrived at his ex-wife’s home to talk with her and his 4-year-old son. She is engaged to the firefighter.

After the ex-husband entered the house, an argument ensued and he was shot, McGinty said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim was believed to be about 35.

Authorities would not comment on what led to the shooting, and neighbors said there had never been any problems at the house.

Juliet Haas and other neighbors said the couple have lived in the house for more than a year. “They are really nice people,” Haas said. “We’re all just shocked.”
