Devils Make It Count Against the Sharks, 6-1

It was only a matter of time before the New Jersey Devils’ offense broke out, and the San Jose Sharks were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

New Jersey’s line of Patrik Elias, Jason Arnott and Petr Sykora combined for five goals and 12 points as the Devils snapped a four-game winless streak with a 6-1 victory over the Sharks on Thursday night at East Rutherford, N.J.

“We knew we were running into a hornet’s nest,” Shark Coach Darryl Sutter said. “The Arnott line was too much and our defensemen couldn’t handle them.”

Elias had three goals and two assists, Arnott had two goals and two assists and Sykora had three assists as they led the two-time defending Eastern Conference champions to their first win.

Rookie Pierre Dagenais also scored and defenseman Brian Rafalski added two assists for the Devils, who lost their first three games and then picked up a point in an overtime loss to the New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

Pittsburgh 3, Ottawa 0--Johan Hedberg made 28 saves for his first regular-season shutout as the Penguins defeated the Senators at Ottawa.

Martin Straka, Stephane Richer and Robert Lang scored as the Penguins beat the Senators for the second consecutive game.

New York Islanders 2, Carolina 1--Radek Martinek scored his first NHL goal 3:43 into overtime as the Islanders beat the Hurricanes at Uniondale, N.Y., for their first home win of the season.

New York (6-0-0-1), which had won all five of its road games, still has not lost in regulation, and has earned a point in all seven games.

Dallas 3, Phoenix 1--Pierre Turgeon scored two power-play goals in a span of just over a minute in the second period to lead the Stars at Dallas.

Turgeon tied it at 7:25 of the second with his first goal for the Stars, who were on a 5-on-3 when his centering pass got past Sean Burke. Turgeon capitalized with a man-advantage 1:07 later when he fired from the slot to give Dallas a 2-1 lead.

Chicago 5, Nashville 3--Eric Daze and Steve Thomas scored in the last two minutes of the third period as the Blackhawks won at Nashville, Tenn.

Daze snapped a 3-3 tie at 18:08 of the third, and Thomas, who finished with two goals, scored into an empty net at 19:47.

Detroit 3, Philadelphia 2--Sergei Fedorov and Brett Hull scored within 22 seconds of each other in the final minute of the Red Wings’ comeback at Detroit.

Former King Luc Robitaille scored his fourth goal in as many games for the Red Wings.

Edmonton 4, Colorado 1--Anson Carter had two goals and an assist, and Tommy Salo made 28 saves to lead the Oilers at Denver.

The Oilers erased a 1-0 deficit with three goals in the second period, including two by Carter. Mike Comrie and Sean Brown also scored for Edmonton.

Calgary 3, Florida 1--Jarome Iginla scored twice, and Jukka Hentunen got his first NHL goal in the Flames’ victory at Calgary, Canada.

Toronto 6, Vancouver 5--Shayne Corson scored twice as the Maple Leafs held on for the victory at Vancouver, Canada despite giving up a hat trick to Markus Naslund.
