Revival Aims to Bring Black Catholics Together

The Rev. Charles Andrus, director of the African American Ministry for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles, will lead a “Big Tent Revival” from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. next Saturday at Verbum Dei High School, 11100 S. Central Ave., Los Angeles.

The revival will bring the African American Catholic community together, sponsors say. The event will also reach out to those interested in joining the ministry.

EVENTS

The City of the Angels Film Festival, which brings together filmmakers with a spiritual sensibility, begins Thursday night and runs through Oct. 28. “Touches of Evil” is this year’s theme. The festival will be held at the Directors Guild of America, 7920 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles.

A pre-festival screening at 7:15 p.m. Thursday will feature horror master Wes Craven’s “Nightmare on Elm Street” and “New Nightmare.” Between the two screenings Craven will discuss the spiritual influences that have driven his movies.

The festival includes a variety of movies that examine institutionalized evil and inner-city gang life. The festival will also include two days of documentaries on Saturday and Sunday with guest speakers Barbara Nicolosi, founder of Act One; John Furia Jr., chairman of the Division of Writing at the School of Cinema and Television at USC; Katherine Brueck, scholar and author; Guido Fink, Italian Jewish survivor of the Holocaust; Marcia Reines Josephy, director and curator of the Jewish Federation, and Eugene Mornell, executive director of the Skirball Institute on American Values.

* “Pagan Pride Day” will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Woodley Park, Van Nuys. The event will include information booths, vendors, entertainers, rituals and other activities celebrating the autumnal equinox. LECTURE

“Lives in the Balance: Ethical Issues in Death and Dying” will be the title of the fifth annual Grief Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Rolling Hills United Methodist Church, 26438 Crenshaw Blvd., Rolling Hills. The keynote speaker will be Stanley M. Hauerwas, professor of theological ethics at Duke University’s Divinity School. (310) 378-3044.

* The University of Judaism will hold its 12th annual “Program in Biblical Archaeology” at 8 p.m. Mondays through Dec. 10, beginning Monday, at 15600 Mulholland Drive, Bel-Air. This eight-week series will focus on the Israelites’ enslavement, the exodus from Egypt and how archeologists reconstruct the past. Tickets cost $150 for the series or $25 per lecture.
