Light Rail Gives Us a Choice of Mobility

Re “Commuter Rail Plans Pick Up Steam in O.C.,” Oct. 9:

The mayors of Santa Ana, Costa Mesa and Irvine should be commended for reviving the light rail project. Light rail is popular, proven and growing in nearly every major western city.

It will give us all a choice in mobility and will improve our quality of life, while making our cities more walkable and livable.

The current proposal is an excellent and well-thought-out plan. By serving major employment centers like UC Irvine, John Wayne Airport, South Coast Plaza and downtown Santa Ana and by linking these with the two major transportation centers of Irvine and Santa Ana, success is assured.

Also, by being elevated, there will be no grade crossings or safety and collision issues with motorists and pedestrians. This will also make the system fast--about 60 mph along the entire route, resulting in an attractive alternative to driving. Congratulations to the city councils of Costa Mesa, Irvine and Santa Ana for moving this project forward. OCTA should move this critical project forward into preliminary engineering.
