FAA Asked if Airport Would Qualify for Grants

Share

Orange County Supervisor Todd Spitzer has asked the Federal Aviation Administration whether a commercial airport at the closed El Toro Marine base would be eligible for federal grants.

In a letter Monday to FAA Administrator Jane Garvey, airport opponent Spitzer wrote that an airspace review by the FAA warned that El Toro would degrade the efficiency of Southern California’s air system. The FAA approves grants only for projects that “enhance airport and air-traffic control system capacity in major metropolitan areas or reduce current and projected flight delays,” Spitzer said.

County planners project that 10% of the airport’s cost, or $260 million, would come from federal grants. .
