Graf, Agassi Are Parents of a Boy

Steffi Graf gave birth to a healthy son three weeks early, and father Andre Agassi attended the birth.

The baby, Jaden Gil, was born at Valley Hospital in Las Vegas on Friday and weighed 5 pounds 7 ounces, Graf’s representatives said Saturday.

“This is the most proud day of our lives,” Graf and Agassi said in a statement. “We are thankful for this wonderful gift and are excited to begin our new lives as parents.”

Mother and son were doing well and left the hospital the day after the birth, the statement said.

Graf and Agassi married Monday. It is the first child for both.

Agassi, 31, and Graf, 32, began dating after each won the French Open in 1999. Graf, a seven-time Wimbledon champion, retired in 1999.

Agassi was previously married to Brooke Shields. It is Graf’s first marriage.

Forward Chris Manker, who graduated from Laguna Beach High, has left the Oregon State men’s team for personal reasons, Coach Ritchie McKay said.

Boxing

Former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield is pressing charges against a man who allegedly plowed his car through the gates of the boxer’s suburban Atlanta home.

Michael D. Copeland of Jonesboro, Ga., was charged with criminal damage to property.

Copeland told police he was a postal worker and became disoriented Wednesday evening when he felt a burning sensation on his skin, said Maj. Bruce Jordan of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department.

Officers found literature about anthrax, a bottle of the antibiotic Cipro and a surgical mask on the front seat of Copeland’s car, Jordan said.

Copeland was treated at Southern Regional Medical Center and released. The hospital did not immediately know if he was tested for anthrax.

Soccer

Austria clinched a spot in the World Cup playoffs, getting an injury-time equalizer to tie Israel, 1-1, at Tel Aviv.

Austria will play Turkey in a two-leg series for a spot in the 2002 World Cup at South Korea and Japan.

Skiing

Austria’s Michaela Dorfmeister edged World Cup giant slalom champion Sonja Nef at Soelden, Austria, in the season-opening race. Dorfmeister ended the Swiss star’s five-race winning streak. She is trying to regain the World Cup giant slalom title she lost to Nef last season.

The top American finisher was Kristina Koznick in 15th place.

Miscellany

Germany’s Claudia Bokel won the fencing epee world title with a 12-8 victory over France’s Laura Flessel-Colovic at Nimes, France.

Stanislav Pozdniakov of Russia defeated Julien Pillet of France, 15-10, for the men’s gold medal.
