THE SCORING: * UCLA: Ryan Nece, 39-yard fumble return at 12:55. PAT--Chris Griffith (kick). * Stanford: Luke Powell, 20-yard pass from Chris Lewis at 4:48. 91-yard drive, 13 plays. PAT--Mike Biselli (kick).

TURNING POINT: With Stanford driving into UCLA territory and facing third and long while trailing, 7-0, Cardinal receiver Ryan Wells stole a 14-yard first-down pass from linebacker Mat Ball, who, at 266 pounds, was just not agile enough to break up the play, even though Wells was standing right next to him when he made the catch. That kept the drive alive and Stanford went on to tie the score.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: The only time the Cardinal handed the ball to its fullback, Casey Moore, he fumbled, and the ball was recovered by UCLA’s Kevin Brandt. The rest of the time, Stanford went with running backs Brian Allen or Kerry Carter.

STAT WATCH: Just who is the Heisman candidate? Allen had 32 yards in 10 carries in the period, UCLA’s DeShaun Foster eight in three. Stanford had 29 plays for 165 yards, UCLA 10 for 30.

SECOND QUARTER

Stanford 28, UCLA 7

SCORING: * Stanford: Teyo Johnson, three-yard pass from Lewis at 9:40. 55-yard drive, 11 plays. PAT--Biselli (kick). * Stanford: Allen, 35-yard run at 8:48. 35-yard drive, one play. PAT--Biselli (kick). 35-yard drive in one play. * Stanford: Kerry Carter, 26-yard pass from Lewis at 4:32. 97-yard drive, seven plays. PAT--Biselli (kick).

TURNING POINT: With Stanford holding a 28-7 lead and UCLA obviously in deep trouble, Matt Ware intercepted a pass and returned it to the Cardinal 20. A score of any kind would have put UCLA back in contention. But the Bruins did nothing.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: This was not a Heisman highlight film kind of half for Foster. He fumbled once, losing the ball in the middle of a rugby-like scrum and watching helplessly from the bottom as the ball squirted 10 yards downfield toward a waiting Stanford player. Then, after a nice gain on an end run, he got into a verbal hassle with Stanford’s Coy Wire out of bounds, shoved Wire and was assessed a 15-yard penalty for a personal foul.

STAT WATCH: UCLA had the ball about 91/2 minutes less than Stanford. It also trailed in first downs, 17-3, and in plays and yardage, 39 plays for 353 yards to 25 for 124. At one point, Stanford’s Lewis completed 13 passes in a row and finished the half 13 for 17 for 195 yards and three touchdowns. His counterpart, Paus, was five for 16 for 105 and no scores.

THIRD QUARTER

Stanford 31, UCLA 21

SCORING: * Stanford: Biselli, 30-yard field goal at 9:44. 27-yard drive, six plays. * UCLA: Foster, one-yard run at 4:06. 65-yard drive, 15 plays. PAT--Griffith (kick). * UCLA: Mike Seidman, 23-yard pass from Scott McEwan at :53. 59-yard drive, four plays. PAT--Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: A 32-yard pass from McEwan to Ryan Smith over the middle took the ball to Stanford’s 24 and set up the scoring pass to Seidman that pulled the Bruins to within 10 just before the period ended. Suddenly, it was a game again.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Paus was on the sideline to start the second half, his right hand taped from a thumb injury he suffered on the last play of the half. His replacement, fifth-year senior McEwan, had never connected on a touchdown pass in his career before finding Seidman.

STAT WATCH: The field goal by Biselli marked the first points all season that UCLA had given up in the third quarter. The Bruins had outscored opponents, 72-0, in their first six games in the third period.

FOURTH QUARTER

Stanford 38, UCLA 28

SCORING: * UCLA: Bryan Fletcher, 29-yard pass from McEwan at 4:49. 80-yard drive, eight plays. PAT--Griffith (kick). * Stanford: Carter, 27-yard run at 2:00. 41-yard drive, three plays. PAT--Biselli (kick).

TURNING POINT: With three minutes left and fourth and six from UCLA’s 43, McEwan and the Bruins faced a national championship moment. The pass play was designed to have three layers of receivers at varying depths, and McEwan chose to go for it all with a bomb attempt to Smith. The ball sailed five yards past Smith’s outstretched hands.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: When Fletcher caught his scoring pass to cut the Cardinal lead to 31-28, he continued through the end zone and paused, then posed. That is against the celebration rules, so UCLA got hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and Griffith had to make a 35-yard extra point, which he did.

STAT WATCH: Foster needed 70 yards to get to 1,000 for the season and become the first Bruin to reach that plateau in seven games. He got 77. McEwan was 15 for 24 for 221 yards and two touchdowns in his relief appearance for Paus, who finished five for 16 for 105. Each had one pass intercepted.
