From Times Staff Reports

The California State Historic Preservation Commission is scheduled to vote Friday on whether to designate a piece of the Bolsa Chica mesa as a historic site.

The site, which is just a few acres, contains remnants of an 8,000-year-old Native American village and burial ground.

If the state panel, meeting in San Simeon, approves the designation, the proposal will be forwarded to the federal government.

An official with Hearthside Homes, which has submitted a proposal to the county to build 387 homes on the 105-acre upper tier of the mesa, where the archeological site is, said its development plans would be unaffected.

Hearthside is battling the California Coastal Commission in court over its refusal to allow the developer to build 1,235 homes on the entire 230-acre Bolsa Chica mesa.
