Phil Tataurangi collapsed on the 17th tee during the PGA’s Air Canada Championship at Surrey, British Columbia, then ignored the advice of doctors and resumed play.

The 29-year-old New Zealander fell to the ground, clutching his chest, midway through the second round. He never lost consciousness, but paramedics placed him on a stretcher at the side of the tee box and hooked him up to an oxygen tank. He shot a 72 and missed the cut by three strokes.

Tataurangi suffers from superventricular tachycardia, a heart condition that causes a sudden increase in his heart rate.

In the tournament, Joel Edwards shot a four-under-par 67 to take a two-stroke lead over Matt Kuchar and Sweden’s Per-Ulrik Johansson.

The opening day of play in the Kroger Senior Classic tournament was called off because of rain. Officials said the three-day tournament will be shortened to a two-day event, with play beginning this morning.
