Car Runs Onto Sidewalk, Killing 2, Injuring 1

A child and a female pedestrian were killed and another woman was in critical condition Saturday night after being hit by a car that ran onto a sidewalk in Laguna Hills, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said.

The accident occurred shortly after 8:30 p.m. on Hon Avenue, about 200 yards north of Alicia Parkway, near Laguna Hills Plaza. The driver of the Mercedes that hit the pedestrians had been traveling north on Hon, from Alicia, when the car left the roadway, said Sgt. Steve Doan of the Sheriff’s Department. The female driver was not injured; she has not been identified.

Investigators were still at the scene late Saturday night. Doan said it wasn’t clear why the car went onto the sidewalk or whether alcohol was a factor. The identities of the victims were not available. Doan said the child was a 2 1/2-year-old girl. The surviving pedestrian is at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center in Mission Viejo.
