Beach Closed to Protect Threatened Bird Species

Authorities have closed Surf Beach until October after eight people were found in restricted areas over the Labor Day weekend.
Major sections have been off limits for months to protect the threatened Western snowy plover. The public had access to the beach, but a deal with Washington limited the number of trespassing violations allowed. Since that number has been passed, the beaches must be closed until nesting season ends Sept. 30.
