Activists Call for Fishing Ban to Protect Pelicans
From Times Wire Reports
Brown pelicans are becoming entangled in hooks and lines along Stearns Wharf, prompting some activists to call for a fishing ban.
The nonprofit Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network says volunteers have disentangled 20 of the endangered birds this year, including one that died on Thursday.
Next month the city plans to put up signs urging people to recycle hooks and line, said Mick Kronman, harbor operations manager.
“I think closing down the wharf might be a bit extreme,” Kronman said.
