Defensive tackle Sean Phillips injured his right knee during noncontact warmup drills at the beginning of practice Thursday.

He said he heard something pop and was attended to by trainers. Phillips stayed on the field and watched the remainder of practice.

The 6-foot-6, 300-pound junior is a valuable reserve who played well in the Bruins’ first two games. He started three games last season and played extensively against Alabama and Kansas because of an injury to Ken Kocher.

Phillips’ injury does not appear severe.

Receivers Tab Perry (right knee) and Craig Bragg (ankle) were held out of practice to allow minor injuries to heal.

Another receiver, Ryan Smith, missed practice because of illness.

Scouts from the Dallas Cowboys and New York Giants watched practice.

NFL scouts and player personnel directors have been frequent visitors because of the talent level at UCLA this season.

Scouts say DeShaun Foster might be the first running back drafted. Defensive end Kenyon Coleman and safety Marques Anderson also are highly regarded.

More than 100 recruits for various sports who planned visits to UCLA this weekend were told to reschedule.

UCLA might have to compensate the Rose Bowl for playing Arizona State on Dec. 1 instead of Saturday.

Rose Bowl officials planned to refurbish the field after the Bruins’ last home game--which had been Nov. 10 against Oregon--to prepare it for the national championship game Jan. 3.

“It could create a cost to us,” UCLA Athletic Director Pete Dalis said. “But we won’t play anywhere else.”
