The Jerry Rice Across America Farewell (Or Maybe Not) Tour moves to Miami, two weeks after Rice was greeted in Kansas City by an awestruck replacement official who declared it was “an honor” to call a game in the presence of the great man.
Today, a similarly awestruck Dolphin safety Brock Marion says, “If the opportunity comes about, I’d like to introduce [Rice] to my son and ask for his autograph.”
Meanwhile, Jon Gruden, Rice’s new coach, has a request of his own:
Hang on to the ball, Jerry. Please.
In Kansas City, Gruden fell flat on his face in contorted agony after Rice dropped what would have been a touchdown pass against the Chiefs.
“He was definitely open, and I was ready to celebrate Jerry’s first career touchdown with the Raiders,” Gruden explains. “We needed it at that time. I just went down. Like lightning struck me. It wasn’t a planned deal. I went down, man. I was disappointed, to say the least.”
Interesting. I can’t remember Bill Walsh ever doing that.
The line: Miami by 1.
