Beavers Have a Big Void to Fill

Oregon State not only lost its most experienced defensive back when Calvin Carlyle dislocated his left shoulder during practice last week, it also lost an emotional leader.

Carlyle, a senior safety from Dorsey High, is so demonstrative he would run into the offensive huddle during timeouts and rally his teammates.

“We already needed some gaps filled, and losing him, we don’t what it means until you see who will answer the call,” Beaver running back Ken Simonton said.

Carlyle probably will apply for a medical redshirt year. He will be replaced by redshirt freshman Mitch Meeuwsen or Eric Mobley, a senior from Antelope Valley High.

“Meeuwsen is a guy we think is very talented and Mobley is an experienced guy,” Coach Dennis Erickson said. “But Carlyle was a leader for us, so it’s not going to help.”

Bryce Bohlander will be a captain Saturday, but not only because he grew up in Keizer, Ore. Against Ohio State, the junior tackle recovered a fumble and made a tackle after a Buckeye picked up another fumble and began running.

“Bryce probably saved a touchdown on that play,” UCLA Coach Bob Toledo said.

UCLA’s Jewish players, who include starting offensive linemen Troy Danoff and Mike Saffer and tight end Mike Seidman, plan to practice Thursday on Yom Kippur ....
