Undefeated Simi Valley Girls Pass Test in Tennis

Simi Valley High’s undefeated doubles team of Amber Swenson and Maria Espinoza lost a set for the first time this season, but the Pioneers remained perfect with a 10-8 victory over host Newbury Park in a Marmonte League girls’ tennis match Friday.

Swenson and Espinoza did win two of their three sets, but their first loss in 21 sets was to Julia Campbell and Alexa Mareschal, 6-4.

Aimee Fiore swept her three singles sets for Newbury Park (5-3, 2-2 in league). The other doubles teams for Simi Valley (9-0, 3-0) also swept three sets each.

In other girls’ tennis:

Corona del Mar 16, Santa Barbara 2--Brittany Reitz didn’t lose a game in sweeping three opponents as the Sea Kings, No. 1 in The Times’ rankings, beat visiting Santa Barbara (3-3) in a nonleague match.

Alhambra Keppel 9 (72), South Pasadena 9 (65)--No. 3 singles player Amber Marsden, a freshman, defeated South Pasadena’s No. 1 player, Cami Whitney, 6-4, to help host Keppel (8-1) to a nonleague victory on total games.

Ventura St. Bonaventure 9 (76), Carpinteria Cate 9 (69)--Katie Callaghan swept her singles sets, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead the Seraphs (6-0), who won on total games at Cate (5-1).

In water polo:

El Toro 6, Carlsbad 4--Chris Allen, Adam Wright and Matt Grace each scored twice for host El Toro (8-3) in a quarterfinal of the Villa Park tournament. The Chargers, No. 5 in The Times’ rankings, will play La Jolla The Bishop’s in a semifinal at 11 a.m. today at Villa Park High.

La Canada, a 9-7 winner over Villa Park, will meet Brea Olinda, an 8-5 winner over Laguna Beach, in the other semifinal at 10 a.m. The championship game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.

In girls’ volleyball:

Capistrano Valley d. Edison, 15-6, 15-12, 15-17, 15-2--Brandy Magee had 19 kills for the Cougars (6-0) and teammate Janelle Migeot added 15 kills in a nonleague victory.

Torrance Bishop Montgomery d. L.A. Marlborough, 15-11, 15-11, 17-15--The Knights (11-3) were led by senior Courtney Rolling’s 17 kills, two blocks and 15 digs and junior Jamie Crawford’s 10 kills and 14 digs. Kristen Castillo had 35 assists in the nonleague victory at Bishop Montgomery High.

In girls’ golf:

North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 216, Mission Hills Alemany 254--Eunice Lee shot two-over-par 39 in a Mission League match at Encino Golf Course to pace the Wolverines (2-0, 2-0), the No. 5 team in The Times’ rankings.
