Guillen Has Tuberculosis
The Seattle Mariners’ Carlos Guillen has been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis and Manager Lou Piniella isn’t sure if the shortstop will be back for the start of the playoffs on Oct. 9.
“I think it’s probably less than 50-50,” Piniella said. “We’re not sure.”
Guillen, 25, was placed under quarantine.
“We are still consulting with public health officials on a timeline for Carlos to return to action,” team doctor Mitch Storey said.
Because pulmonary tuberculosis is contagious, all the Mariners will be tested for it, Storey said. Like a common cold, it spreads through the air.
