Glaus, Angels Pound Rangers

Troy Glaus hit two home runs and drove in six runs to lead the Angels to a 13-2 victory over the Texas Rangers at Edison Field Saturday night. Starter Ramon Ortiz pitched a strong eight innings and Garret Anderson had three RBIs to give him 118, a franchise record for a left-handed batter, and the Angels ended a seven-game losing streak. All in all a nice night.

“It doesn’t mean much if you aren’t winning,” said Glaus, who hit his 40th and 41st homers. “The win tonight doesn’t change the fact of what we’ve done all season.”

Manager Mike Scioscia was a little more upbeat.

“This was a good ballgame for us,” Scioscia said. “A lot of different things helped us win. ... We ran the bases well, Troy supplied the power, it was a terrific game from Ortiz, we made some plays in the field.”

This was also the night when Scioscia put center fielder Darin Erstad at first base.

It was somewhat of a homecoming for Erstad, who had been the Angels’ first baseman in 1997 and some of the time in 1998 and 1999. “I thought Darin didn’t skip a beat out there,” Scioscia said.

. Texas Texas left fielder Texas hit the ball hard in the first inning but scored only one run. That would be the only score for the Rangers off Ortiz (13-10). And the Angels wouldn’t trail for long. In the bottom of the first they had three doubles (Erstad, Orlando Palmeiro and Adam Kennedy); an RBI single from Anderson; a two-run home run from Glaus. It added up to five runs in a hurry.
