FIRST QUARTER UCLA 7, Oregon State 0

THE SCORING: * UCLA 7, Oregon State 0: DeShaun Foster, three-yard run at 12:01. 28-yard drive, three plays. PAT--Chris Griffith (kick).

TURNING POINT: The Beavers had second and eight at their own 41 when wide receiver George Gillett beat UCLA safety Kevin Brant and was wide open. But Jonathan Smith overthrew Gillett, one of three overthrows for Smith in the first half. Up in the broadcast booth, commentator Tim Brant didn’t hesitate to note that Brant was beaten on the play. Tim Brant is Kevin Brant’s father, which ABC pointed out later by showing pictures of father and son. On the next play after the overthrow, Smith, under pressure, had a pass deflected that was intercepted by Jason Stephens, a play that set up Foster’s touchdown.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Stephens’ interception was an indication things might be going UCLA’s way. Stephens ran 10 yards and fumbled, but the ball bounced right into the arms of teammate Ricky Manning, who went another 17 yards to the 28. Foster was stopped for no gain on first down, then went 25 yards around left end and almost got into the end zone. He scored on the next play.

STAT WATCH: Foster, who had only 65 yards against Ohio State and fumbled four times a week earlier, had 55 yards in 10 carries in the first quarter. Cory Paus was only two for six for 19 yards. The Beavers’ Smith was four for 11 for 34 yards.

SECOND QUARTER

UCLA 17, Oregon State 0

THE SCORING: * UCLA 10, Oregon State 0: Griffith, 42-yard field goal at 1:22. 61-yard drive, 11 plays. * UCLA 17, Oregon State 0: Brian Poli-Dixon, 38-yard pass from Paus at 0:00. 47-yard drive, five plays. PAT--Griffith (kick)

TURNING POINT: On the second play of the quarter, UCLA linebacker Marcus Reese hit Ken Simonton, forcing a fumble that UCLA’s Marques Anderson recovered. The Bruins failed to capitalize, but Reese’s hit seemed to set the tone for the rest of the game.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: The Bruins were putting together an impressive drive late in the second quarter when guard Eyoseph Efseaff, a freshman from Porterville, was called for a personal foul for a late hit. It was the Bruins’ third personal foul of the first half. The other two were on the defense. The Bruins were left with a secondand24 at the Oregon State 39 after the penalty on Efseaff and ended up settling for a field goal.

STAT WATCH: Foster upped his rushing totals to 21 carries and 87 yards by halftime. Poli-Dixon, with his over-the-shoulder catch for a touchdown on the final play of the half, had three catches for 47 yards by halftime.

TURNING POINT: On UCLA’s second possession of the second half, Foster went back to work. He ran for 50 yards in five carries on the eight-play, 80-yard drive that was capped by his 17-yard touchdown run. Then on Oregon State’s next drive, a pass to Gillett appeared to get the Beavers out of trouble, but Stephens forced a fumble that was recovered by Reese. Poli-Dixon caught his second touchdown pass of the game on the next play, and the rout was on.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: A holding penalty and three incomplete passes by Smith stopped an Oregon State drive late in the third quarter. UCLA faced secondandthree at its own 45 when Akil Harris, a sophomore from Monrovia, broke loose on a 54-yard run to the one. Foster scored on the next play.

STAT WATCH: Foster had 147 yards and three touchdowns in 31 carries and was done for the day. So was Poli-Dixon, who finished with six catches, 107 yards and two scores.

FOURTH QUARTER

UCLA 38, Oregon State 7

THE SCORING: * Steven Jackson, 63-yard run at 6:52. 80-yard drive, four lays. PAT--Ryan Cesca (kick)

TURNING POINT: Another personal-foul penalty on UCLA gave Oregon State a first down on its 37 after the Beavers were facing third-andeight at the 22. On the next play, Jackson broke loose for the Beavers’ only score.

NOT IN THE SUMMARY: Harris and Manuel White, a 240-pound freshman running back from Valencia, got in plenty of work in the fourth quarter. Harris finished with 74 yards in seven carries and White 41 yards in eight carries.
