Los Angeles police are investigating two apparently unrelated fatal shootings that occurred within a mile of each other late Sunday in the Jefferson Park area.

A 28-year-old man was shot while he stood outside a house in the 3600 block of South 8th Avenue about 10:50 p.m. Sunday, according to authorities. Two men shot him several times and ran off, Officer Jack Richter said.

The victim was found with gunshot wounds to his stomach and died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, said Craig Harvey at the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

About half an hour later, another man was gunned down. Witnesses said four men in an older-model car opened fire on three men as they stood outside a home in the 3700 block of South St. Andrews Place near Exposition Boulevard, a mile west of the first shooting, Richter said.

A 25-year-old man was shot several times in the back and died at Cedars-Sinai. The other two men were treated and released, Richter said.

Detectives, who did not identify any of the victims, said the shootings do not appear to be related.

“This was not a case of retaliation,” Richter said. “These were two entirely different shootings.”
